The Original Purpose of ERP Was Transaction Control<\/h2>\n
ERP gained acceptance in the business community by performing mundane tasks efficiently. ERP gives companies the ability to track purchase orders, invoices, movements of inventory, accounting transactions, and production through the establishment of formalized records for all business activity. In essence, ERP serves as digital record-keeping systems (i.e. a permanent, reusable record) for all business activities.<\/p>\n

Demand didn’t shift overnight the way it does now.<\/li>\n
Sales happened through a handful of channels, not dozens.<\/li>\n

In that environment, getting the transaction right was the whole job. Nobody needed the system to think ahead, because the ground underneath it barely moved.<\/p>\n
Modern Operations Have Become Too Dynamic for Transaction-Based ERP<\/h2>\n
That ground has shifted considerably. A typical mid-sized business today juggles multiple warehouses, an ecommerce storefront, a few distributors, maybe a marketplace presence, and a supplier network spread across time zones. None of that holds still for very long.<\/p>\n
What’s emerged from this is a strange kind of imbalance. Companies aren’t short on information anymore if anything, they’re drowning in it. What they’re short on is action.<\/p>\n

A system of execution answers a different set entirely:<\/p>\n

What’s stuck, and why?<\/li>\n
What’s the next step?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Moving from the first list to the second isn’t a small upgrade. It’s arguably the biggest shift ERP has gone through in decades, because it changes what the software is actually for.<\/p>\n
A Rare Insight: ERP Is Becoming the Operating System of Work<\/h3>\n
A lot of ERP discussions focus on dashboards, reports and analytics. While this is important, this is not the area in which the most significant change will occur.<\/p>\n
The more important change is ERPs will start to act less as a filing cabinet and more as a workflow coordinator, flagging exceptions before they escalate, and nudging businesses to the next best step – all different from how ERP software has historically been defined (i.e., accurate record keeping).<\/p>\n
