Pick the goods the package will contain
The picklist identifies the warehouse task. Staff confirm product, quantity and the applicable Bin Location, lot or serial details while recording the actual pick.
If the physical result differs from the requested quantity, resolve the exception before it becomes a packing instruction. A short pick may lead to a corrected location, an agreed partial shipment or a delayed order. The short-pick workflow covers that decision.
When the goods are ready, packing uses the actual picked quantities. Keeping requested, picked and packed quantities distinct helps prevent an unfilled portion of the order from being included in the dispatch record.
Turn the picked quantity into a package
Consider a hypothetical order for 12 units, packed into two cartons of six. The packer checks that the two cartons together contain the 12 units intended for shipment and prepares the package information needed by the selected carrier process.
If one carton contains only five, the difference needs resolution before the shipment is finalized. The useful control is agreement between the order, recorded handling and package contents, not simply producing a label for two cartons.

Some controls are configurable. A tracking-number requirement can make that information mandatory for posting. With Warehouse Management, a Bin Location requirement helps keep the stock source recorded. Shipping preferences can support service selection and label generation when a matching carrier rate is available.
These options fit different shipping operations. A parcel carrier, customer pickup and other dispatch processes may need different details, so the selected workflow should reflect how the goods are actually leaving.

A saved shipment and a posted shipment represent different points in the process. The shipper finalizes the quantity being dispatched and posts through the configured workflow. Customer service and billing can then use the recorded fulfillment result.
If a posted shipment needs correction, use the appropriate reversal and correction process, subject to dependent transactions. That preserves a traceable account of the change instead of leaving the order and warehouse with conflicting quantities.
